Expertise Every Board Needs
Most nominating committees recognize the need for those with financial and legal expertise to sit on their boards.
Here are some additional fields from which boards should be looking to add people as well:
- PR/Marketing
- Social Networking
- Fundraising
- Program and Event Planning
- Human Resources
- Sales
When nominating people to serve on your board, consider the following criteria in addition to professional skills:
- Geographical diversity (if appropriate)
- Stage of life (you want people across the spectrum)
- Connectors (read The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell if you don’t know this term)
The work is nominating committees is extremely important. They supply the life line for the organization and should be given ample time and strong members to help with the important task at hand.
Just like the old saying, “You are what you eat.” Organizations are reflective of and as strong as who is on their board.
